Transforming Your Subconscious Money Messages: Gitta’s Full Journey

Would you like to be a fly on the wall during a real client’s 6-week healing journey?

Gitta came to me struggling with something she’d carried her entire life: a complicated, painful relationship with money. She couldn’t hold on to it. She never felt like she deserved it. And no matter how hard she tried, she kept ending up in the same place.

What she didn’t know yet was that her money struggles weren’t really about money at all.

Over six sessions, Gitta wrote up her own notes from each week. What follows is her story, in her own words, with a few reflections from me along the way.

Session 1: Uncovering the Hidden Reason I Kept Myself Broke

Gitta explained: “I described my apparent inability to deal with money, from my current situation all the way back to when I was a teenager. I could never hold on to it, it always felt like I shouldn’t have it in the first place, and I’ve never felt at ease with it. At the same time, I’ve always ended up in situations where I had to be responsible for the household income.”

Gwen listened, asked clarifying questions, jotted down a few things, and by the time Gitta had finished her story, she was ready to tap with her. She’s a brilliant guide who homes straight in on what’s essential.

“One ‘aha’ I had was an overwhelming reason why I would choose to remain broke right now: for the first time in my life, Mom is offering me unconditional support in the way of money, not love exactly, but still! Why would I want to give that up?

I yawned and yawned, and the release of stuck energy was tremendous.

Coming from a family where money played a central role (Dad was a bank director, Mom worked in a bank, three of us four children trained as bankers) I use money to compensate for the still unresolved and unmet needs of my early life, and absence of money to set myself apart from family values I don’t align with. Now that I can see and feel this, it’s no longer such a desperate mess.

The panic about my current situation, which was a 10+ intensity and felt like a rigid shield all the way down the front of my body when we started, has gone.

I came out of the session feeling hopeful. I CAN change this!”

That first session set the tone for everything that followed. Gitta had spent decades believing her money struggles were a practical problem. What we discovered together was that they were an emotional one, rooted in her earliest experiences of love, belonging, and worth. The next session would take us even deeper.

Session 2: Who Am I Without Being Broke? Breaking Out of a Decades-Old Comfort Zone

“Big resistance this week! Skype kept cutting out, I felt utterly unsettled. Gwen tapped with me right through it. She kept me feeling safe until Skype worked fine again and I was calm.

I had no idea how scared I was to step out of my decades-old comfort zone, even though it really doesn’t provide me with any real comfort. (Gwen: our comfort zone typically isn’t very comfortable, it’s more “familiar.”)

Who am I without being broke? I have no concept of being prosperous. Being broke is my safety net, my excuse for not doing things, and I’m clinging to it.

Gwen has this great knack for homing in on the central issue, and before I knew it, I was back at my first week in grammar school, age ten, the country bumpkin among the smart city girls. I was made fun of and felt so totally ‘poor’ and ‘wrong,’ and there was nothing I could do about it. This was before my dad was promoted, when we were only just scraping by.

My parents didn’t understand what my problem was. They felt I should be grateful to go to such a good school. So I did the only thing I could do: I created a barrier, like a suit of armor, around me to keep me safe. I pretended I didn’t want any of that stupid stuff, but secretly I yearned to have beautiful things, go on trips, be part of that other world. I acted as though I despised money but secretly, I so wanted to have it. I still do.

That’s the connection. Never in a million years would I have figured this out by myself! I yawned and yawned. This is HUGE for me.

I’m beginning to see what’s possible. I’m beginning to get an outline image of me being prosperous.”

A ten-year-old girl in a new school, feeling poor and out of place, built a suit of armor to survive. Decades later, that same armor was still running the show. In session three, we would come face to face with the little girl wearing it.

Session 3: The Little Girl in the Suit of Armor — Meeting My Five-Year-Old Self

Gitta’s opening comment was that the previous week “was a mega-intense session with the little girl in the suit of armor.” After their last session, I had sent her a picture of a little girl in a suit of armor.

“I’d just wanted to tell her how the image resonated with me, but I burst into tears, and with Gwen’s intuitive and skilled guidance I spiraled down the years to my five-year-old self, saying to my Mom in my little-girl voice: ‘It doesn’t matter, don’t worry…’ And Gwen completed it for me: ‘I can take it, I’ll do it, I can manage it, it’s all right. I’ll take the responsibility so it’ll be all right for you.’

And I’ve been doing that ever since. Here I am in my sixties: load me up, give me your inability to cope, and let me do it for you. Emotionally, financially, practically, in any way possible.

The payoff for me was: as a small child, I had a new role within my family after being usurped by my new, ill little brother. And to this day, it keeps me from having to sort out my own stuff.

I’ve loaded myself up with responsibility, clutter, work I haven’t a clue how to do, on behalf of not just me but everyone around me who ‘can’t cope.’ Like a red line all the way down my life: RESCUER AND CARRIER OF OTHER PEOPLE’S BURDENS. I’ve tapped on this before, but on my own I automatically shut down before it gets really scary.

We tapped and tapped, Gwen providing the words, me adding where needed. Gwen devised an ingenious solution for my need for both protection and freedom: take the suit of armor off and hang it in the wardrobe. You can put it back on any time you need it. But when it came time to do that, it didn’t fit anymore. I had outgrown it. It had kept me little for all those years.

By the end of the session, I felt softer, less held in, and a lot clearer and calmer.”

We are a product of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it. By session four, Gitta was beginning to feel that truth in her body, not just understand it in her mind.

Session 4: Letting Go of Other People’s Burdens with EFT Tapping

This week’s session began by tapping on the vulnerability Gitta feels when she is “out there” as herself.

“We tapped on the vulnerability I feel when I’m just me, out in the world, and an old nightmare reappeared, one that had dogged my sleep from childhood into my thirties. Only this time I suddenly knew: that’s not my stuff. I was carrying someone else’s unfinished experience, and we tapped on my remaining need to carry other people’s burdens until it was gone.

We also tapped on my fears around going ‘live’ as a shamanic practitioner. What if I’m not good enough? What if I can’t help others? What if this isn’t what I’m for after all? And there it was, the great black hole: if not this, then what? Fear, fear, fear.

Tapping to Gwen’s intuitive words, chasing the physical sensations of this fear around my body, I finally came to a point of peace. The fear dropped from off-the-charts 10+ to maybe a 2, and I realized that at my core, I do know who I am.

By the end of our session, I felt as though a great weight had peeled off me. So much calmer, so much more able to stride out: I AM good enough. I AM this.”

(Gwen: I love when this happens with my clients. Emotional freedom IS priceless!)

Gitta was putting down burdens she’d been carrying for other people her whole life. But there was still one more layer to uncover. Session five would bring her face to face with the deepest root of all.

Session 5: When Money and Love Get Tangled — Healing the Root of “I’m Not Good Enough”

“My opening line was: I seem to be blocking money from coming in. I procrastinate instead of taking action that would bring work my way, and I can’t seem to get out of this overwhelming lethargy.

Gwen made the connection to the desperation I feel before I ‘kick into action,’ my adult self taking over to save the day. But Little Gitta will do her level best to prevent an easy flow of abundance, because she’s still waiting for her prince or princess to rescue her and take care of her.

This turned out to be central: money and love are interchangeable for me. Love me, value me, validate me, cherish me, keep me safe. Deep down, I feel I have no value. And at the same time, I totally reject this love-equals-money idea. Things flashed up faster than I could handle them.

Little Gitta, three years old, shoved aside roughly by an overwhelmed, worried mother rushing to get to her ill new baby son. No explanation, no cuddle. Just: get out of the way. Little Gitta translated this to: you’re not who I love, you have no value, you’re just in the way.

My constant worry about my work, what if I can’t give value, traces back to a giant fear: I’M NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Gwen guided me through it, helping me differentiate Little Gitta from Adult Gitta, fear from love, then from now. As the fear tapped down, I could finally see my bewildered, dejected three-year-old self from my adult vantage point.

I see my three-year-old’s yearning to be taken care of, at odds with the brave little warrior girl in the suit of armor fighting for survival by keeping everything at arm’s length. And I see my adult self’s yearning to be strong, connected, happy, and prosperous, constantly at odds with those two earlier parts of me.

We tapped our way into a position of peace. I thanked my three-year-old and my little warrior girl for keeping me safe all those years, and I let them move on. I let them go. The relief is profound.”

After five sessions, Gitta had traveled from the surface of a money problem all the way down to a three-year-old girl who simply needed to know she was loved and valued. That little girl had been running the show for sixty years. In our final session, there was one last piece waiting to be found.

Session 6: From the Outside Looking In — Releasing the Last Layer

This was the final session. Gitta opened by saying she still felt second-best, still on the outside, looking in.

“Gwen asked me when I first felt like this, quick, without thinking, and there I was, sitting alone on the stairs while everyone else was inside having dinner, having fun. I felt unfairly treated, resentful, sad, lonely, and utterly helpless. They were in there and I wasn’t allowed to be with them, so there must be something wrong with me. Second-best. Never allowed to shine. Somehow, I just didn’t measure up.

That memory morphed into another nightmare from my growing-up years, one that followed me into adulthood: a high, featureless white wall with no entrance. All of life, fun, and happiness happening inside, and I was on the outside, no way in. So small. So utterly alone. So excluded. So hopeless. The intensity was around 8 out of 10, a feeling of dread in my belly and throat.

We tapped and tapped, and what it connected to most strongly was overwhelm. Gwen flipped the image from a wall others had built to shut me out, to one I’d built myself to keep safe from the overwhelming assault of incomprehensible things coming at me from every side. I was a hypersensitive child, utterly alone with it. I did the best I could to keep myself safe. The dread changed to gratitude, and the intensity dwindled to nothing.

I remembered a recent family celebration, sitting among relatives and friends, some I love, some not so much, aware of the strong connections between most of them while I, having lived abroad for over three decades, was more ‘on the outside, looking in.’ And I realized: it didn’t trigger me. I was all right with it. It didn’t feel like a reflection of my value.

That realization has stayed with me ever since. I don’t have to be included in everything to feel valued. It’s safe to let things play out without me. I can just be as I am, let others be how they are, and it’s all right. How cool is that?”

End Notes: What Six Weeks of EFT Actually Changed, in Gitta’s words

“Tapping with Gwen, I became aware of connections I couldn’t see before. We would clear the associated panic and fear so I could honor and accept the original old feeling, send it love, and see my reaction as my small-child-self doing the best she could to keep herself safe in incomprehensible, overwhelming situations. This brought me to a feeling of peace. I felt the profound relief of that old belief being released from every cell of my being.

You’ll notice that even though this program is about clearing money messages, it’s really about so much more. The money messages are just the visible part of the iceberg, and as the sessions progress, you uncover root causes you weren’t aware of and release them. As a result, your attitude toward money changes.

For me, the customary feeling of dread connected with ‘lack’ and ‘never enough,’ the thing I used to wake up with and go to sleep with, has quietly slipped away. I no longer feel incapable of allowing prosperity into my life.

And if you’re wondering whether this resulted in any hard cash: as a result of allowing a ‘maybe’ where before I could only see a harsh ‘no way,’ I now have a steady monthly income that covers my basic bills, and after months of nothing I now have two book translations and a website-update translation lined up.

Overall, a massive weight has shifted off my life as a direct result of daring to Transform My Subconscious Money Messages with Gwen.”

Gitta’s story is one of the most complete examples I’ve seen of how EFT works. What looks like a money problem on the surface is almost never really about money. It’s about the beliefs we formed when we were small, the armor we built to survive, and the parts of ourselves that are still waiting to feel safe, valued, and loved.

If any part of Gitta’s story sounds familiar, I’d love to help you find your own version of that relief.
